Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450 g beef flank or sirloin steak — thinly sliced against the grain
  • 3 cups broccoli florets — fresh for best crunch
  • ½ cup soy sauce low-sodium preferred
  • 3 cloves garlic — minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger — grated
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch divided
  • 1 tsp sesame oil optional
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water or beef broth

Method

Step 1 — Marinate the Beef:
  1. Toss sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tbsp cornstarch. Rest for 10–15 minutes.
Step 2 — Make the Sauce:
  1. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and broth. Add 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (slurry). Whisk until smooth.
Step 3 — Cook the Broccoli:
  1. Blanch or steam broccoli for 2 minutes, then rinse under cold water to stop cooking.
Step 4 — Stir-Fry the Beef:
  1. Heat oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Sear beef 2–3 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
Step 5 — Combine:
  1. Add sauce to the pan; simmer until thickened. Return beef and broccoli, tossing to coat evenly.
Step 6 — Serve:
  1. Serve hot over rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Notes

  • Slice beef thin and against the grain for tenderness.
  • Keep broccoli slightly crisp for texture contrast.
  • Cook on high heat for authentic stir-fry flavor.
  • Double the sauce if you love it extra saucy!
  • Add chili paste or Sriracha for a spicy kick.
